The song "A Face in the Crowd" by Damon (the Gypsy) has a very curious pedigree.  This brilliant and unique recording was originally arranged and produced in the early 1960s by Chester Pipkin, (record producer for Motown, A&M and more), then subsequently published by Brian Stone's 5-West Music. It eventually got lost in the ever changing music industry.
Legend has it that Damon was signed with Green & Stone Management Company who also had a little duo named Caesar & Cleo under contract.
Soon after Green and Stone produced and released songs in the Bakersfield test area to see how each recording would do.  Damon's "The First Hello to the Last Goodbye" made it to a modest spot on the charts, while the duo known as Caesar & Cleo reverted to their real names, Sonny & Cher. Their song "Baby Don't Go" skyrocketed to #1 in a matter of weeks.
Because Green & Stone were a bit short on funds, Damon and Joey were offered to void their contract...
